Like many women, many of my swimming memories have been tainted by the thought of the dreaded bathing suit. Shopping. Trying on. And the actual dreaded wearing of a the bathing suit has scarred my thought about swimsuits. Until this summer, it suddenly hit me. As, I was getting my four year old ready for swimming lessons I realized that kid’s bathing suits are parents’ special little summertime gift. Like a gift from the gods to compensate for children being out of school for 3 months.
You literally never have to wash them: I could stop writing right now. Do I really need another reason?
You never have to worry about finding socks and underwear: The getting dressed portion of the day in my house has always been a disaster. The worst part is always finding a clean pair of socks and underwear.
They are stain resistant: Stains have been plaguing me from the first minute I became a mother. So much so that I have seriously considered only purchasing clothes in the colors of black and brown. But, bathing suits,oh the magical blend of lycra, spandex and whatever the hell they are made out of, mask stains like a champ. Chocolate ice cream cone drips? No problem, just rub them in and TADAAAA..they are gone.
They stretch: Most pieces of clothing my daughter has is adorably cute and fits perfectly. For about 3.5 weeks. Kids grow…fast. Bathing suits are one of the few pieces of clothing that my daughter can actually fit into for more than 3 minutes.
Kids think they’re awesome: Apparently my daughter and I have completely different tastes in children’s clothing. I want her to wear pants, she insists on shorts. On the hottest day of the year, she will argue with me about why she wants to wear a parka. The only time we don’t argue over clothing is when it’s time to put on a bathing suit. Bright colors, cool characters, fun patterns, what’s not to love? Bathing suits designers, you are geniuses.
You can wear it over and over: During the summer months the “What are you going to wear today?” question is a no brainer. Buy a couple bathing suits, rotate them every few days and voila, summer wardrobe is complete.
