Finally after a long, cold winter, Spring has finally arrived. Bring on the sunshine, flowers and warm weather. But…After the snow clears and the days start to get longer, you will soon start to realize that although Spring brings great weather it also brings some not so “sunny” realities for moms.
That Whole Hairy Leg Thing: Warm weather = Less Clothing Coverage. Less Clothing= Uncovered Legs. Uncovered Legs= revealing the humiliating fact that the last time you shaved your legs was for the short dress you wore to your New Year’s Eve Party. Since as a mom you generally have about 2.5 minutes of showertime before the door pounding/yelling/crashing sounds begins, shaving is the first thing to get whittled off the speed showering checklist during the winter months. Unfortunately, unless you want your kid’s friends to question if their mom is part bear, it’s time to buy a razor.
Bathing Suit Shopping: It’s inevitable. It’s going to have to happen soon. Ew. Just, Ew.
The Bedtime Debacle: One of the most fabulous parts of having a young child is the ease in which you can (lie) sway them to believe things as you see fit. During the winter it is easy to trick your kids into believing it is bedtime when the sun starts to set at 4:45pm. it’s like Santa’s little gift to parents for the winter season. Sadly, the arrival of Spring means that each day it gets a little harder to convince your kids it’s time for a bedtime story when the sun is still shining brightly at 7:00pm. Damn you Spring solstice, damn you.
Upcoming School Vacation: Spring may have you doing a little mental happy dance, that is until the warm weather double whammy hits you. Two weeks of Spring Break: Bam. Two Months of Summer Break: Bam Bam. Enough “Oh crap the kids will be home all day” to keep you out of your mind until fall.
Opened Toed Shoes: It’s time to start packing away the boots and come face to face with the reality that the next 6 months will be all about opened toed shoes. While others may be shopping for the cutest sandals/wedges/espadrilles I will be faced with the sad truth that in the last 6 months the closest thing I got to a “pedicure” was being able to exfoliate one foot with the other.
Spring Cleaning: In a house with children, cleaning is one of those on-going/never ending/non stop things that are a mainstay on my daily to do list. When you have kids, cleaning is not simply a task to finish because it never ends. For moms, cleaning is kind of like breathing. No matter how much you do it, you need to continue to do it.Forever. No matter what. That’s why the whole concept of “Spring Cleaning” is kind of like a punch in the gut. My home is a mess year round, I don’t need my Pinterest feed filled with “tips” on how to deep clean a house that will be dirty again in 10 minutes.
Your Body Is Not Exactly a Wonderland: Remember all those cookies you ate at Christmas? Remember your New Year’s fitness resolution that lasted only 11 days? Remember the 2 pound box of Godiva you finished off because you didn’t want it to “go to waste”? Sadly, it’s time to peel off the layers of clothes and deal with what’s left. Is 4 years too long to use the “baby weight” excuse?
